Boy George Misses A Golden Opportunity to Remain Silent

I know next to nothing about Boy George except he sang a song titled, Do you Really Want to Hurt Me, or that was a chorus lyric in one of his hits, that’s why, under normal circumstances, I would not bother to comment on him. 

 

But as he’s penned a song sharing his views about Apartheid Israel’s barbaric assault on the Palestinians in Gaza that has been accepted by numerous human rights organizations as well as G*nocide historians, Jewish and non Jewish alike, as a “G*nocide, I feel compelled to say something.

 

In the song that is titled, “We Will Dance Again” we have lyrics like:

“You say genocide, I say war/ When you’re attacked, that’s what the army’s for/ Does it get ugly? You bet it does/ When I know you wanna kill every last one of us.”. In addition to justifying Israel’s G*encode by describing it as a war, he also attacks the pro-Palestinian movement describing those opposing a crime against humanity as, like “sheep”.

 

Celebrities whose world is a parallel universe detached from the experiences of the vast majority of human beings, would do better to keep their mouths shut. And unfortunately many of them who oppose Israel's G*nocide have,  for fear of retribution, this is particularly the case with actors.

 

It’s hard to imagine that almost three years after the hundreds, perhaps thousands of Palestinians broke out of the confines of what has been described as the largest outdoor concentration camp in the world, under siege since 2007, that anyone can refer to the conflict as a “war”. 

 

Israel has one of the most powerful militaries in the world, backed and funded by the United States and other western allies. The Palestinian people, constantly under guard, have no navy, no air force, no army.

 

In response, to the October 7^th attack, the Israel has destroyed Gaza completely and it is impossible to know how many thousands of innocent people lie beneath the rubble. Some estimates put the death toll as high as 500,000 including more than 60,000 children, though it is impossible to tell and the Israeli’s are still killing off the witnesses and refuse to allow independent journalists it to Gaza. The Zionists have now moved in to neighboring Lebanon and are razing villages there displacing over one million people.

 

The non-Jewish population of Israel, in the occupied territories, Israel proper or Gaza, have been attacked for seven decades. Much of the population of Gaza are refugees or children of refugees from villages the Zionist regime destroyed not miles from the camp’s fence and the resident driven in to the strip.

 

Boy George, whose real name is George Alan O’Dowd, is quite offended at the backlash that his song has generated among the wider public and has responded in a statement given to Britain’s Sun newspaper and published in the Independent.

 

“The suggestion that I feel no compassion for Palestinians is both untrue and absurd. I am devastated for the loss of the innocent lives on both sides of this war and I call for peace.”, he writes.

 

He was very disturbed by the attack on the music festival causing him to feel “deep emotions”,  “I could have been there and we know that there were people from more than 40 countries who were,”

 

Has Boy George wondered for one minute who on earth would attend a rock concert a couple of miles from a concentration camp, and what sort of people and country would allow it. 

 

George vomits out the Zionist line again and again arguing that the motive behind the resistance that broke out of Gaza and attacked their captors that day were motivated by a hatred of Jews. This has been the narrative from the beginning but Israel’s brutality has undermined it significantly. Even Piers Morgan, who spouted this line in the early days can’t avoid the obvious, Israel is committing a genocide.

 

The conflict in Palestine is not a religious war any more than the conflict in Northern Ireland, is. The Palestinians are an occupied people in their own land and have every right to resist occupation. Boy George is of Irish ancestry he should understand that better than most. The colonial people that fought the British in Kenya, Malaya, India, Ireland or any of the colonial possessions were not driven by a hatred of the English or British people; they were fighting their oppressors, the colonizers.

 

“I understand that is uncomfortable to defend your friends when a war like this is raging but the woman who sells me bagels is not to blame, neither is my doctor or publicist, manager, ex-boyfriend or my thousands of Jewish friends. This song is for them.”

 

It’s staggering that three years on and witnessing the prominent role young Jews in particular are playing in the movement against the G*nocide and for Palestinians’ right to self-determination, he can have the opinions he does.

 

The lyrics in his song, he writes,   “…doesn’t mean that I don’t have compassion for Palestinians, it doesn’t mean that I agree with what's going on in Israel, but I am always going to defend the people that I love,” 

 

As I re-read his statement I almost feel sorry for him. You love Zionists? 

 

“I am a Jew loving, trans hugging queer hippy and my mother would be proud of me.”. he writes. 

 

If he cared for Jews he would oppose Zionism and its g*nocidal policies that are a danger to Jews throughout the world and fodder for anti-Semites.

Israeli society rotting from the inside

There is nothing happening to Israelis that can in any way compare to the brutal and genocidal assault on the people of Gaza, where at least 75,000 were killed, overwhelmingly non-combatants, and tens of thousands of them children. The tiny sliver of land, onto which a quarter of a million Palestinians have been herded,  is little more than a camp, where men, women and children have no economy, education, little health care and no future. They exist entirely on humanitarian aid.

Likewise, none of the uncertainties or fears that might be harboured by the population of Israel can compare to the ongoing and continuous pogroms and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank. On a daily basis, the smaller towns, villages and farms, are attacked as Palestinian land and farms are seized, homes torched and livestock stolen by Jewish settlers. Not a single settler has been convicted or even charged for the dozens of murders of Palestinians in the West Bank.

Socialists in Europe and elsewhere look on in horror at these developments and the disgraceful lack of action, and even the absence of criticism, from most Western politicians. It beggars belief that so-called ‘Labour’ leaders have for years tolerated and empowered the Israeli government, on the grounds that this state is an ‘ally’ of Britain. The Labour Friends of Netanyahu are a powerful lobby in the Labour Party, even now, in Andy Burnham’s new cabinet.

But as we have explained in previous Left Horizons articles, Israel’s hostility, aggression and barbarity – which sum up its policy towards its near neighbours – will inevitably have repercussions internationally and internally.

The Israeli Defence Force, described by its supporters as ‘the most moral army in the world’, beats up women and arrests children in the West Bank. In Gaza, the West Bank and now in Lebanon, it uses the dynamiting of homes and ethnic clearnsing as prime military tactics. All of this has resulted in international support for Israel withering away. But what is also happening is that it is rotting Israeli society itself from the inside.

Two more Israeli soldiers commit suicide this week

An article this week in the liberal Israeli newspaper Haartez, reports on two more Israeli soldiers committing suicide, bringing the total of active duty soldiers committing suicide to 16 this year. “The figures,” the Haaretz article says, “point to a further rise in the number of suicides within Israel’s defense establishment, continuing a trend that began after the outbreak of the war on October 7”.

There is no parallel in any military establishment anywhere in the world with the psychological mayhem in the IDF. “In the decade before the October 7 war,” Haaretz explains, “the average number of military suicides was 12 per year. Since then, the number of suicides has risen. According to military data, from October 7, 2023, through the end of that year, seven active-duty soldiers died by suicide; in 2024, 21 soldiers died by suicide; and last year, the number stood at 22 – the highest figure in 15 years”.

An earlier article in Haaretz, dealing with suicides also noted the process of psychological decay in Israel. It referred to reservists being traumatised by three years of non-stop war, witnessing events that have driven many to the point of suicide. In recent weeks, it said, Haaretz conducted discussions with mental health officials who paint an “alarming picture”.

“The numbers [of suicideal reservists],” explains Eyal Fruchter, chairman of the Israeli National Council for Post-Trauma, “leave no shadow of doubt…Israel faces a national crisis”. Haaretz then refers to figures from the Israeli defence establishment: “Before the war, the rehabilitation branch dealt with 62,000 injured, of whom 11,000 were dealing with mental health issues. As of last month, the numbers had shot up to 82,000 and 31,000 respectively.”

The problem of PTSD is not something that disappears when the war or the tour of duty is over. “The damage that we’re seeing today constitutes just a small part, even the tip of the iceberg, of what will be coming,” one expert, a world-leading researcher in the field of trauma, told Haaretz. “The research shows significant rates of delayed reactions. It’s precisely periods of quiet that allow traumatic content to erupt. Many discharged soldiers are ticking time bombs.”

Generalised social malaise in Israel

This is not just an issue that is affecting reservists who have seen active service. It reflects a generalised, social malaise, brought on in part by Iranian (and to a lesser extent, Hezbollah) missile and drone attacks. A significant part of the whole population is suffering PTSD, according to the experts.  “Israeli society is exhausted, feeling a sharply intense burnout. It’s grappling with moral questions, with a sense of betrayal by the state and its leaders.”

The generalised impact of forever wars, which is Netanyahu’s primary policy, has meant a recorded rise not only in suicides but also in domestic violence. Referring to a widespread rise in poor patterns of sleep, one of Israel’s leading psychiatrists commented, “This is not surprising; we live in a state of uncertainty. The phone might ring again in an hour, and missiles from Iran could be launched. We’re in survival mode – and this has consequences.”

Since October 7, the report notes, psychiatric hospitals have seen a 30 or 40% increase in self-referrals. The number of those being treated in so-called “resilience centers”, which provide support to Israelis in mental crisis situations has risen from 5,000 in 2022, to 36,000 in 2025.

As Israeli society rots from the inside, its international support has withered. US Vice-president JD Vance made an astonishing dig at the Israeli leadership this month, when he commented on the reluctance of Netanyahu to go along with the first ceasefire agreement with Iran. The USA, at least to an extent, is trying to force Israel into an agreement with Hezbollah and into accepting that its long-term aim of destroying the Iranian regime is not possible. Vance’s speech was a part of that process, as he reminded the Israelis who was ‘boss’.

“Donald J Trump”, he said, according to CNN, “is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time.” That is not strictly correct, given the craven support given to Israel by the like of Starmer and other European leaders. But nonetheless, Vance was letting the cat out of the bag.

“We are your only friends” – JD Vance

“If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government,” Vance continued, “I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left in the entire world.” Here, Vance is acknowledging that world opinion has swung massively against Israel since its onslaught on Gaza was started, then to be followed up by ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

On a global scale, the thousands of demonstrations against the genocide in Gaza, involving tens of millions of protesters, often week after week, we have seen the biggest political protest movement on a single issue in the whole of history. It has had a profound effect on Western politics, although not yet on the majority of the political leaderships and governments.

Even in the United States, where the American-Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC) once bought Democratic and Republican politicians with its extremely deep pockets, public opinion has swayed massively against Israel.

According to the magazine +927 (January 2026), over Israeli 150,000 citizens have left the country in the past two years, many of them with one-way tickets and no plans to return. It is taking a long time – far longer than most on the left would want – but the policy of the Israeli right wing is going to be demonstrable proven, even to Israelis themselves, to be unsustainable.

Military hegemony over the whole region, with a constant round of wars, occupations and aggression is not a route to a ‘safe and secure’ homeland for Jewish people. It is a road to psychological, political and social decay.

Labour wants the repression of Palestine Action to serve as a blueprint for politics. Why not lock up opposition party leaders and any constituents who protest government policy?

Mike Tapp, a minister in the Home Office, recently posted on X a “gotcha” response to Green Party leader Zack Polanski’s criticism of the Labour government’s decision to proscribe Palestine Action. 

In the wake of the Court of Appeal ruling this week to uphold proscription, Polanski noted the government’s authoritarian assault on civil liberties. Thousands of grandparents –retired lawyers, doctors, vicars, army veterans – he pointed out, had been arrested on terrorism charges simply for holding a placard saying: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

In response, Tapp asked Polanski: “Do you support the Palestine Action group?”

This was Tapp’s attempt at entrapment. If Polanski answered in the affirmative, he could be jailed for up to 14 years – because of the unprecedented decision Tapp’s own Home Office took to declare Palestine Action a terrorist organisation. 

No direct action group in the UK’s history has ever before been designated a terrorist group, on a par with al-Qaeda and Islamic State.

Tapp clearly thought he was being clever. But all he was really doing was further exposing the ugly, patently authoritarian nature of the government he serves in and its complicity in Israel’s endless atrocities in Gaza.

Tapp is not some disinterested party in all this. He is a vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel, the genocide-compatible wing of the Labour party that dominates the cabinet.

Investigative journalist Paul Holden noted on X: 

Tapp has taken money and benefits from Labour Together, Labour Friends of Israel and Stuart Roden, who founded the Israeli-based VC company Hetz Ventures with Judah Taub. Taub is a former IDF Special Forces operative who served as an IDF reservist in Gaza. 

The Labour government is stuffed with compromised individuals like Mike Tapp, who serve as Israel’s cheerleaders in the UK. 

In addition, or more likely as a consequence, many of these ministers, from Keir Starmer down, receive large donations from the Israel lobby. 

Polanski replied to Tapp: “The fact that your government has made it illegal for me to answer yes is a damning testament to your flagrant disregard for civil liberties.”

The McCarthy-emulating Tapp is not some outlier in the Labour party. He is its beating heart. It was his wing of the party, at the behest of the Israel lobby and working covertly through the unlawful activities of Labour Together, that helped confect an imaginary “antisemitism crisis” in the party in the second half of the 2010s. 

Their goal was to use anti-democratic means to drive Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters out of the Labour party and put corporate donors and the Israel lobby firmly back in charge of policy.

While Tapp was seeking to jail the only Jewish leader of a major British political party this week, it emerged that another Labour MP, Peter Kyle, had reported a female constituent of his in Brighton to the police. She was arrested and charged after writing to him in protest at the government’s support for Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Kyle apparently believed that, in writing to him, her MP, the woman had committed a crime under the Communications Act by “causing him annoyance”. Presumably, Kyle finds it annoying to be reminded of his party’s collusion in genocide.

And presumably he imagines too that, in his version of democracy, MPs should never be questioned by those they represent on ethical issues, such as complicity in a genocide. 

Shockingly the Crown Prosecution Service agreed to pursue Kyle’s case through the courts, proving once again that it is nothing more than an adjunct of the executive branch. 

In a rare sign of the independence of the judiciary – at least at its lowest levels – a local magistrate threw the case out this week. 

There is, of course, a connecting thread in these two cases: both Labour MPs hoped to use the law to crush criticism of their party’s continuing support for Israel’s genocide.

They imagine their authoritarian repression of Palestine Action can serve as a blueprint for British politics. Why not lock up opposition party leaders and any constituent who dares to write protesting at their criminal behaviour? 

This is how Starmer’s Labour party conducts its politics: through intimidation, disinformation and show trials. 

And they do it not for our benefit or, as they keep proclaiming, in the interests of “national security”. 

No, they do it for the benefit of a foreign government viewed, even in Israel, as the most extreme in its history, one that includes self-declared fascists who Israel’s former top general, Moshe Yaalon, this week compared to the Nazis.

The Starmer government is tapping deep into its own fascist instincts. And with Nigel Farage’s Reform party nipping at its heels, there is little hope that the situation is going to improve any time soon.

Legal profession revolt against the UK judge whose job is to protect Israel's genocide

Judge Johnson so rigged the trial of anti-genocide activists that 1000s of legal professionals have urged him to step down from the sentencing hearing. But Johnson's dirty work is not yet complete.

The trial of the Filton Four reaches its climax on Friday. Judge Jeremy Johnson will decide the sentences of four Palestine Action activists found guilty of criminal damage – after two juries refused to convict them of far more serious charges brought by the British government, via the Crown Prosecution Service.

Keir Starmer’s government failed to secure the convictions for aggravated burglary and violent disorder it so desperately needed. They would have helped retroactively justify its decision to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation – the first time in British history that a direct action group, which targets property, has been proscribed.

Starmer’s hostility towards Palestine Action is personal. It has been a massive thorn in his side during Israel’s near three-year genocide in Gaza.

From the outset, Starmer suggested that Israel had the “right” to withhold food, water and power from the 2 million Palestinian residents of Gaza – a crime against humanity for which the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

Starmer’s complicity in the genocide has only been underscored by Palestine Action, which has targeted Israeli factories operating in the UK run by Elbit Systems that supply Israel’s genocidal army with killer drones for use in Gaza.

The so-called Filton trial derives its name from an Elbit factory in the Filton neighbourhood of Bristol that Palestine Action targeted in August 2024. Efforts to destroy these Israeli drones came at a time when Starmer was under enormous popular – if little political – pressure to end British arms sales to Israel.

PR crisis

Proscription, however, has not worked out well for Starmer. It has entangled him in a self-inflicted public relations crisis of almighty proportions.

Palestine Action activists have been held in remand without trial for an unprecedented period of time, far in excess of the normal maximums, and in especially harsh conditions that have treated them as if they were terrorism suspects, even though their arrests long precede the group’s proscription last year. 

These sustained abuses led to a prolonged hunger strike, and a desperate government and media campaign to justify their mistreatment. 

Proscription has led to thousands of people, most of them elderly and including upstanding members of British society – from magistrates and doctors to army veterans – facing convictions for “supporting terrorism” for holding up placards stating: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.”

This popular backlash cornered the High Court into declaring the proscription unlawful – a decision the government is appealing. That has led to another unprecedented situation: police are still arresting people for holding the placards, despite the courts ruling that the basis for such arrests is unlawful.

The law has never looked more of an ass.

Which is why the government is pinning its hopes on Judge Johnson riding to the rescue on Friday.

Judge Johnson has not been shy about showing where his loyalties lie. Not to the law, but to the British security state.

Which should hardly come as a surprise, given his background.

Judge Johnson made it to the bench after years serving as the most favoured barrister of the “secret state”, representing the intelligence services, the ministry of defence and the police. His working environment of choice as a lawyer was behind-closed-doors prosecutions held out of view of the public or proper legal scrutiny.

Rigged trials

Judge Johnson has done precisely nothing to counter the overwhelming impression that the Filton activists’ prosecutions were entirely political. He quite openly rigged both trials in manifold ways, as former British ambassador Craig Murray has set out. 

Let me quote from him at length the ways Judge Johnson flagrantly skewed the hearings to the detriment of the activists and justice:

Judge Johnson ruled that the defendants were not permitted to refer to their motives.

He ruled that the jury may not be informed of their absolute right to acquit.

He attempted to have the leading defence barrister, Rajiv Menon KC, prosecuted for contempt of court for informing the jury of their rights.

He ruled that terms including ‘genocide’ and ‘ethnic cleansing’ may not be used in court.

He ordered that the notebooks and other writings of the accused be redacted to withhold from the jury any information related to Elbit’s supply of weapons to Israel.

He enforced the concealment from the jury of the nature of the weapons and equipment that had been damaged.

He granted anonymity to senior Elbit staff and admitted their evidence without the defence being able to cross-examine.

He ruled that the trial had *not* been prejudiced by the Secretary of State [Yvette Cooper] and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police [Sir Mark Rowley] stating the offences as fact throughout national media.

He allowed the release to the media of highly edited and selective prosecution video footage during the trial which gave a false impression of events.

He permitted the admission of Metropolitan Police video evidence which they had given over to Elbit’s sole custody for an entire year.

In a trial with so many extraordinary anomalous moments, perhaps the most glaring was Judge Johnson’s efforts to get the main defence barrister in the first trial, Rajiv Menon KC, jailed for contempt of court simply for noting to the jury in his summing up speech that they had a hundreds-of-years-old right in law to acquit.

Judge Johnson’s behaviour was so unprecedented and certain to have a chilling effect on the ability of defence barristers to represent their clients – the Filton defendants decided to dismiss their barristers from summing up in their second trial to avoid their lawyers facing prison for doing their job and defending them – that the Court of Appeal had no choice but to overrule Judge Johnson’s contempt proceedings against Menon. 

Murray rightly concludes: "That is an astonishing list of nefarious actions by Judge Johnson. Read it again. Many people will surely conclude, it is Judge Johnson who should be in jail."

Gagging order

But even with the convictions for criminal damage secured under these rigged conditions, Judge Johnson is still in a position to cause more harm to the rule of law. He is due to sentence the Filton Four on Friday. 

Judge Johnson has reserved to himself the right to sentence the four anti-genocide activists not just for the relatively minor criminal damage charge they were convicted of after his rigged trial, but – once again in an unprecedented move – treat those criminal convictions as if they were for terrorism offences.

That means he can impose a longer sentence, more draconian prison conditions and more onerous, life-long conditions after their release. 

The jury knew none of this when they were considering whether to convict. Judge Johnson placed a gagging order on his decision during the trial which meant the information was withheld from the jury and could not be reported until after the verdict. The gag was broken only by foreign mediaand Zarah Sultana, who used her parliamentary privilege to reveal Judge Johnson’s government-friendly, anti-justice machinations. 

In yet another unprecedented feature to the trial, this will be the first time in British history that someone accused of criminal damage is sentenced as a terrorist. Judges were only given these extraordinary powers in a highly controversial amendment in 2021 to counter-terrorism legislation. 

Judge Johnson’s logic for taking advantage of his extra powers in this case is quite extraordinary too. He argues that, in destroying Elbit’s killer drones, the activists were seeking to “influence” the Israeli government to change its policy in Gaza – that is, to stop committing a genocide.

Putting pressure on governments is what terrorists try to do, he argues, so this must mean the anti-genocide activists are terrorists.

Opposition to the genocide, in Judge Johnson’s view, has to be treated as an aggravating factor, not a mitigating one. 

It is all the more astounding that Judge Johnson is using this argument when he refused to allow the jury to hear any evidence of the activists’ larger political motivations: that they wanted to stop British complicity in Israel’s genocide by targeting a factory that made the drones for use in that genocide. 

Remember, all this is happening as Starmer’s government makes unprecedented moves to end many jury trials in Britain, leaving us to the mercy of judges like Jeremy Johnson. 

As Defend Our Juries notes, the government is looking to create “an extraordinary and deeply authoritarian precedent, allowing countless more protesters to be tried for an ordinary offence, but secretly sentenced as terrorists, without juries knowing this when they convict”. 

‘Cruel and vindictive’

Judge Johnson’s rogue manoeuvrings have so incensed the legal profession that thousands signed a petition demanding that he take the chance last Monday to recuse himself from the sentencing hearing. He, of course, refused to do so. 

They call his behaviour during the trial “biased” and “discriminatory conduct” and have referred him to the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office.

Here is David Whyte, professor of law at Queen Mary’s University of London, who handed the petition to the JCIO explaining another reason why so many legal professionals are outraged by Judge Johnson’s actions: he has shown exceptional “cruelty and vindictiveness” in holding the activists in remand for more than three times the normal maximums, even when the prosecution was not asking for them to be remanded, and for refusing them bail between their convictions and sentencing. 

The Court of Appeal is due to issue its ruling on the government’s appeal against the earlier High Court decision declaring Palestine Action’s proscription unlawful this coming Monday, days after Judge Johnson’s sentencing of the Filton activists. 

If this is all starting to look like theatre, that it because it is. In dictatorships, these are called show trials. Everyone understands that the outcome is predetermined. Everyone understands that justice is non-existent. The verdict is entirely political. It is a faux-legal rationalisation of what the security state wants. 

Judge Johnson is the perfect judge to play that part. 

The courts will do exactly what is expected of them unless they are worried that public revulsion will discredit their decision. Now is the time to raise our voices. 

Tortured For Trying To Get Food to Starving People. US and Israel, Rogue States.

A horrific account of what it was like when the Zionist regime kidnapped members of the flotilla that was attempting to get food to a starving population in Ga*a. The most disconcerting aspect of this is it’s not shocking at all. It’s par for the course for the Israeli Offense Forces and what this woman describes here has been happening to Palestinian Muslims for decades. This regime, backed by the US and its western partners considers itself untouchable but support for Israel in the US and throughout the world is declining. 

 

The woman in this video points out that some of her torturers had American accents. By most accounts there are some 20,000 Americans serving in the IOF. Many of them are dual citizens which is a result of the Zionist regime’s policy that anyone from any country in the world who claims to be Jewish immediately receives Israeli citizenship and the US has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel.  Many of the settlers are Americans. These fanatics will be returning home and many have done so but are IOF reservists. They will be a threat to us all.

 

The victims of this latest kidnapping, a direct violation of international law, stress that what they are suffering does not compare to what the Palestinian people are forced to endure at the hands of this genocidal Apartheid,  state. The Zionists could not do this without the support from the US and the US taxpayer. But that support is waning.

 

The activities of this US settler colony in West Asia is a threat to Jewish people throughout the world. Zionism cannot survive without anti-Semitism, or Jew hatred, as Arabs are Semites.  Where anti-Semitism is absent, Zionism will create it, and it’s important to remember that.

 

Were it not for social media, despite its negative aspects, the true nature of the Israeli regime would have not been so exposed as it is now. The behavior we are witnessing the indigenous people of Palestine have been forced to endure for decades since the creation of Israel by western imperial powers over 70 years ago. 

 

This will not end well for Israel or the rest of the world. But end it will.

 

Is Iran the Only Obstacle to the US/Israel Genocidal Wars? *

Israel’s targeting of over a hundred Beirut sites in under a minute today suggests their attack on Lebanon has now reached genocidal proportions. Given their new name for the assault, Operation Eternal Darkness, and their continual threats to turn Lebanon into Gaza, their genocidal intent should now be clear. Any time a group is committing genocide in one place, we should expect the violence they are carrying out elsewhere to turn genocidal if given time, for genocide is never so much an intention as it is an impulse—and Israel’s genocidal impulses should now be blindingly obvious.

In this way, Iran’s threat to withdraw from the recent ceasefire agreement if Israel continues with its assault on Lebanon might be said to constitute a humanitarian intervention. And while humanitarian interventions are so rare that many political analysts would argue they virtually never occur, this is at least the second on the part of Iran. The first happened in the early nineties in Bosnia, where they joined with H•zb•llah in breaking an arms embargo, which had been imposed by the West, to stop what would later be labelled a genocide, ironically… by the West.

But if we take western states at their word, and we treat Hez•ollah and the Ho•this as mere proxies of Iran, then we would have to label their intervention in Lebanon as Iran’s third humanitarian intervention, following their efforts to stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Both groups sough to raise the financial and political costs to Israel of sustaining the genocide by, in the case of the Ho•this, closing off the Red Sea to shipping, and in the case of H•zb•llah, forcing Israel to divert a substantial portion of its forces to the north.

So, what we are seeing is a historical rarity. 

The willingness of Iranian leaders to continue fighting is all the more extraordinary in that their lives are arguably more at risk than perhaps any other leadership in the modern history of war. There has certainly never been a case in modern interstate warfare where the leader of a country, the head of their judiciary, and the head of their legislature, along with a number of cabinet level officials, were all killed in so short a period—and the high level assassinations have been going on for years now, including two secretaries of defense. So, we cannot say that the Iranian leadership is simply risking the lives of their citizens while they punch buttons from afar. 

Political pundits would not hesitate to call it a humanitarian intervention if carried out by western democracies, but we are so indoctrinated that even the most radical western news sites would not think of it in the case of Iran.

Still, it is not lost on the average citizen. A tremendous portion of the American electorate has sided with Iran, and so has most of the world, by the looks of most comment sections of major news sites. Genocide is the ultimate evil, and groups that carry it out tend to be despised, insofar as their crimes come to light. So, the targeting of Israel and American sites in the Middle East, along with the United Arab Emirates, which has been sustaining the genocide in Sudan, seems to have provided much of the world with a sense of relief—in spite of the substantial risks to the global economy and the possibility of nuclear armageddon.

And it seems to have provided many with the only real sense of justice they have experienced in global affairs in years.

These are simply the facts, framed so as to highlight what remains invisible to most people due to the spell of propaganda in which we are all immersed. It is not to endorse Iran’s government or H•zb•llah, which would be illegal in many countries in the West, in any case. Whatever might be said about Iran’s human rights abuses at home, and there is a lot to criticize; and however much the country’s experiment in theocratic democracy is in need of dramatic reform; they are stopping what a substantial portion of the planet has come to see as the greatest threat to humanity.

And at great risk to everything they hold dear, not least their own lives, Iran’s leaders have refused to let Lebanon go the way of G•za, at least for the moment—and that is more than can be said of any other state. And this raises a simple question: why has every single western democracy allowed itself to be shown up by a country whose military most of them have labeled terrorists? And why have so many of us, who have criticized the country’s failure to live up to our own highest standards of human rights at home, failed to sacrifice even a small portion of what their leadership is willing to risk in order to stop what many would now agree is the greatest threat to humanity?

Of course, my readership comes from all over the world, and many have put their lives at risk to stop Israel’s crimes against humanity; and many have done the same to bring greater freedom to Iran. We should honor them all, but we should not lose site of the complexity of international affairs. The villains of yesteryear are often driven to take heroic stands today; the heroes of today are often the villains of tomorrow. And a good cause under one set of circumstances can quickly sour as the ground moves beneath our feet and everything on the geopolitical chessboard changes places.

Hence, we should honor what is right and good when it is taking place, knowing every value system and ideology is prone to corruption, and everyone is capable of heroic stands—as anyone who has watched a few films can imagine.

It is even possible to work to stop a genocide while simultaneously supporting the extermination of a people. Iran might be said to have done this in fighting Isis in northern Iraq while supporting Assad’s extraordinary crimes against humanity in Syria; the Biden administration did this for a time in stopping arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which was starving Yemen, while sustaining the genocide in G•za—though they would eventually come to support the starvation of Yemen in solidarity with Israel, along with the genocide in Sudan, by upgrading America’s defense partnership with the United Arab Emirates, also for Israel.

We need not support a party to recognize its extraordinary stands for justice. But when the people we are accustomed to criticizing risk more than ourselves for our own causes, as so many of us have recently seen with Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens, we should take this as an impetus to work harder. The fight for G•za is not over. Israel can be stopped. And it is quite possible it will go the way of the greater majority of states that define themselves around committing genocide—which is to say in the dustbin of history, unwept, unsung, and detested for the grotesque monstrosity it came to be.
