I am returning again to the heartbreaking scenes of the oil covered brown pelicans. These pelicans were once so common in Loiusiana that they are on the state flag. Their number was estimated at close to 50,000 at the beginning of the last century. By 1961 not a single nesting pair could be found along the state's entire coast. They had been wiped out by DDT and other pesticides which thinned the shells of the eggs which then were crushed when the birds sat on them. We need to be clear. They were wiped out by capitalist agriculture. By capitalism. This confirms what we argue here on this blog. Capitalism does not work. Capitalism wiped out 50,000 brown pelicans in Louisiana.
In 1968 Louisiana took birds from a surviving Florida colony and reintroduced them to the state. The birds struggled to hang on as the wetlands disappeared under the assault of the canals being cut by the capitalist oil companies laying pipe. Now we have this most recent capitalist catastrophe in the gulf and in Louisiana. Once again the brown pelican and with it many other species are being wiped out. As we argue, capitalism does not work. It is destroying our planet. The capitalist thugs from Cheney, to Palin to Obama with their, drill baby drill, represent the capitalist system which is destroying our world. They have to be fought. There is an alternative to the oil based world economy but it will not be achieved by the profit addicted capitalist system. Join us on our blog and in struggle for a democratic socialist society.
