The cost of oil

Any talk about the cost of oil at the moment brings to mind the catastrophe in the gulf. But we must not forget that we are paying a huge cost in other areas also. One trillion dollars is the estimate that has now been spent in the invasions and occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan and these are to secure the oil and resource wealth there for the giant US oil corporations. Imagine what this one trillion could do to alleviate poverty in the US and the world.

But it is not only dollars that are being squandered. In Iraq alone there are 88,000 US troops and 90,000 so called contractors, that is people employed by private companies who are doing the work that in the old days would have been done by US troops. This is a total of 170,000 people involved in the occupation of Iraq. Imagine what 170,000 people could do to improve lives in the US and worldwide.

And think about what 170,00 people could do in moving to clean up and contain the catastrophe in the gulf. Capitalism does not work. Not only for all the other reasons but also because of its priorities. Its priorities are always profits and from this flows war and destruction of the planet.

many people thought that when they elected Obama that he would have different priorities. This blog was not of this opinion. Another slick bourgeois politician was our view. He surrounded himself with the capitalist politicians and advisers and along with them he has ruled. He has not been prepared to take on the corporations in any way. He is paralyzed by his total commitment to capitalism and his belief that there is no alternative.

As we argue again and again. Working class people need to break from capitalism and from its parties and state. We need our own party, a mass working peoples party. We also need to clearly reject capitalism and fight for a democratic socialist society on a world scale. If we do not then our planet and lives will be destroyed. It is not enough to believe that the present system is no good. We have to do something about it. keep checking out our blog. But also contact us and together we can get involved building together for a different world, one which is not ruled by the corporate criminal elite and their criminal parties and politicians.

Sean.
