Capitalism and Science or International Socialism and Science.

Sean O'Torain

I have been thinking about this video. It raises many questions. Especially about the tribe that has been untouched by so-called civilization. Would the earth have been threatened as it is now under capitalism if humanity had remained in their way of life? I am posing this just to get some, answers to this question, particularly for myself.  I put a comment in response to person who wrote about the video that “Science Always Wins.” As my comment says below it is a dialectical question. In other words it matters whether we are talking about science under capitalism or science under an international working class democratic socialist society.

Science has reached the stage where if society is changed to an international democratic socialist sustainable world with the working class in democratic management and control, then the science that exists can be used to transform the world and life on earth for the better. If not, and capitalism is not overthrown and replaced by this new world system, then science under capitalism will destroy life on earth as we know it. Science is like all other aspects of human development and has to be seen in context. Which class and which section of which class makes the decisions.

If someone states that science "always wins" without exception, I think this is not correct. Capitalism in control of science will destroy life on earth as we know it and wipe out the human species. There were old societies with more advanced science which were wiped out or collapsed and were replaced by less scientifically developed societies. The remnants of some of those with more advanced science can be seen in the ocean beds, the jungles, the deserts. But this time the situation is different. This time, climate change, nuclear war, pollution, all the result of science-----capitalist controlled science----will destroy life on earth as we know it. Is it not the case then that science need not always win.
