Mubarak regime mobilises thugs and police to attack protests. Battles raging in Tahrir Square
The paid thugs of the state have entered the scene in Egypt and there have been serious clashes between pro Mubarak supporters and the demonstrators. There has been some vicious fighting as what are being described as Mubarak’s paid thugs rode in to Yahrir Square on camels and horses and some of them were dragged from their mounts and beaten.
Reports have said that some of the pro Mubarak crowd are policemen in plain clothes. Others were just paid thugs being paid $17 to participate or sometimes paid in food, "Members of security forces dressed in plain clothes and a number of thugs have stormed Tahrir Square," three opposition groups said in a statement.
"I'm extremely concerned, I mean this is yet another symptom, or another indication, of a criminal regime using criminal acts,” said the former exiled opposition figure, Mohammed ElBaredei adding that he fears the situation may turn in to a ”bloodbath” referring to the pro Mumarak people, as a “bunch of thugs”.
Al Jazeera reports that political discussion is everywhere in downtown Cairo, a place where it was forbidden just a few weeks ago and that:
“Anger at the United States and Israel - seen as Mubarak's two staunchest allies - was palpable. Dozens of people held signs criticising the US for backing the president, and one demonstrator carried a "leave, Mubarak" sign written in Hebrew. "It's a message for Netanyahu," he said, referring to the Israeli prime minister. Another protester held a sign that said, "I hate Mubarak and I hate Israel."
The US has further damaged its credibility for continuing to hang on to its trusted friend Mubarak. Much of the funding for the weapons and forces now moving against the demonstrators comes from the US taxpayer. The mild response, initially a response of support for Mubarak, from the US compared to how Washington supported Iranian demonstrators against the Mullahs doesn’t go unnoticed either.
It is so obvious that dictators, murderous, or Neo NAZI type regimes are OK as long as US capitalism is allowed to plunder the wealth of the region at the expense of the welfare and democratic rights of the population.
The US government has no credibility among the Arab working class and youth.
“The Egyptian capitalist state is in crisis, but it remains intact and is working to regain full control. The mass movement has yet to develop the necessary organizational forms and political leadership.”, statement on the WSWW says today and we would agree with this. As we have stated in previous blogs, one conclusion we must draw from these events is the need for mass organization of the working class that can draw the revolutionary forces together, defend the revolutionary process and defeat the organized forces of the state and its US backers that are mobilizing to crush the Egyptian working class.
In such a contest, a stalemate cannot go on forever. The military let in the pro Mubarak protesters today and did not stop the violence. The military is an arm of the state and appeals must be made to the rank and file of the army to join the revolution that is occurring and spread it throughout the Middle East.
