Comrades, Sisters and Brothers,
While all workers should be ecstatic over the rescue of the miners in Chile, we are seeing the most disgusting spectacle. The Wall Street Journal boasting that capitalism has saved the miners.....this is like the foxes claiming they saved the chickens. The nauseating scenes of Chile's billionaire president and mine owner himself in the front of the line to congratulate them when they reach the surface. And there is talk of book deals, films and other moneymaking ventures that are aimed to ensure divisions open up between the miners over the spoils and nothing is said about the horrendous mine safety record of the mines in Chile and the rest of the world.
The capitalist propaganda machine is using this to overcome the mood of disgust and hatred of the market and its adherents in the wake a historic crisis of global capitalism. There is no way that in the consciousness and hearts of the Chilean miners there is an not understanding and hatred of the conditions in which they work, why they ended up in this almost certain death situation and who is responsible. There is also Chile's past under the US installed dictator, Auguste Pinochet, a period that severely weakened Unions and other worker's organizations.
The aim of the media circus is the suppression of this collective spirit.
The leaders of the global worker's movement could take this opportunity to present these heroic miners to the rest of the world and rather than promote book deals, organize a tour to build solidarity among all workers and a global movement against the capitalist offensive. The Labor leaders worship of the market will prevent them from taking such steps, but there are literally millions of activists, trade Union members, socialists and anti-capitalists of all types that can step in to this vacuum.
We appeal to all left groups, and activists to join in a united front to organize a world tour for some of the Chilean miners, and to use this to build global solidarity and unity across borders, to do what the worker's leaders refuse to do. Where we are in Unions or other worker/community organizations we can raise money and support for such a venture.
Please contact us if you support this idea and are willing to make it happen.
