There are 50 million students enrolled in public K-12 education in the USA. Despite a massive media campaign against our public schools, enrollment has increased by 26% in the past 20 years. Public school teachers are rated as one of the three most respected professions in the US, according to Gallup Polls over several years. And even in so-called conservative rural and suburban areas working people are proud and protective of their public schools.
So why are our schools constantly under-funded and constantly put on edge by school administrations and politicians?

Free, public education was a right won by working people over many, many decades. It did not fall from the sky. It was opposed by corporate America.
