Re-introduction of Slavery in Britain
After almost 200 years since the end of slavery in the UK, this monster is on it's way back.
My brother was for many years a shop steward at PanAm where he cleaned the planes. He then went on to work at American Airlines where he attempted to build the Transport and General Workers Union on the job.
For several years he has worked at a Care Home in South Wales as a maintenance guy. He always has more work to do than there are hours on the clock. Now the new employer is looking to fire him and replace him with someone cheaper. He is currently paid about $1 above minimum wage.
Today he called me and explained that the manager called him in and told him the wages of the worker who replaced him while he was off on sick leave is going to come out of his pay. In fact they have done the maths, considering this worker is paid more and worked overtime, my brother now owes the boss his whole monthly paycheck.
If they get away with this, my brother will have no money for his kid's food or for gas to keep coming to work. If you're on minimum wage pay, you don't have any savings. You have no fallback.
So tonight he is calling up his local Labour Party councillor, whose home phone number he has, and tomorrow he is going down to the local MP's office. He is going to check with them if labour laws have been abandoned and slavery has been reinstated.
While the Labor Party tops are deeply in bed with the capitalists, the local Labour Parties are not in every situation rotten. In Andy's town, Neath, an impoverished working class town, there really are no upwardly mobile types, so a Blarite-yuppie takeover of the Labour Party seems unlikely.
My brother has no internet, so from Oakland, California, I gave him the home address of the local councillor, he said, "oh shit, there's no yuppies in that part of town."
Hopefully we can get one politician to call the boss and at least ask the manager, "what the hell do you think you're doing?"
And what the hell are they doing? They're exploiting the current state of the economy for their economic advantage. They're reinstating slavery behind closed doors.
