This is from a friend who is a student teacher.
Miss Garza is a 1st grade tenured teacher who moved last year from kindergarten to this position. She is bilingual so presents each lesson sentence by sentence in English then Spanish. The school is majority Latino, it is a low income k-6 school that has received help from the state to "fix" it to standards.
Miss Garza''s classroom differs from the other teachers in 1st grade and throughout. In her classroom they have put all the S.E.D. (severely emotionally disturbed), ESL (English as a second language), general MR (mental retardation, basic autism and so on). They went so far as last month to add two students, one girl direct from Mexico with no schooling whatsoever and without any knowledge of the English language, and a little boy from China. No one knew what language he spoke just that he couldn't speak English, luckily enough Miss Garza knows a UNLV professor who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese so that they can get him a tutor. On Monday when I went to student teach they added two more students for Miss Garza to "HANDLE" one there as a "punishment" for bullying another student and a kindergartner for threatening to stab his teacher.
The principal supports her in her efforts, and is real supportive of the school and students, unlike most bureaucratic management he is caring. I am presently working with a young girl from Africa in this class. When her family first arrived in the US they were unaware of standards, cleanliness and typical western lifestyle and culture coming from a rural background among much poverty. The principal took it upon himself and while "off the clock" he donated time to help this family.
However, despite all of these efforts Miss Garza deals with in the class room: MR, SED, ESL and mentoring a student teacher. She is not paid a dime higher in wages than her fellow teachers, in fact, to my knowledge, she hasn't even approached the administration or been approached to be commended or have any restitution for her outstanding job.
I am going to try to see if I can help this situation and see if we can get some active support in the education system here in Las Vegas.
Note:
Teachers are among the most dedicated of workers, like social workers, nurses and others who take care of human beings. But they are also among the most exploited. The employers take advantage of the powerful inherent urge desire we humans have to help each other, to advance the collective rather than the funds in the portfolio.
