John Pilger is a British journalist who has won many awards for his work. He recently spoke about what he saw as the state of the US. He said: "Something is stirring in America, but it is unfamiliar, perhaps, to many of us on the left but it is related to a great popular movement that is growing all over the world. Polls have shown that more than two thirds of Americans say the government should care for those who cannot care for themselves, 64% would pay higher taxes to guarantee health care for everyone, 60% are favorable to trade unions, 70% want nuclear disarmament, 72% want the US completely out of Iraq and Afghanistan." These are the results of a poll of US opinion. Where are these opinions reflected in the politics of the country. The two bosses parties are so dominated by and terrified of the corporations that they keep these opinions hidden. They censor them. The US is a censored society. There is no free media here.
We however maintain convinced. We need a mass workers party with its own mass media outlets and with its own organized base in the neighborhoods and the workplaces. In this way we can counter the lies and censorship of the the bosses media, we can counter the monopoly of politics by the bosses parties. The union leaders spent hundreds of millions in electing Obama and he is kicking them in the teeth. The resources of the unions should be used to build a mass workers party and end the monopoly of politics and the mass media by the bosses and their corporations. As the polls quoted above show, the mood is there for change. It is a question of organizing channels through which this mood can travel and change the country.
