My wife and our kids drove past the funeral parlour at 3.45 this afternoon. It's 3 blocks from our house. A funeral had begun, we hardly noticed. A 15-year old child was shot dead on his porch a few days ago. They were having his viewing down the street.
A little after 4 o'clock we were returning home. The street was blocked. There must have been 20 cop cars around the block and two helicopters flying overhead. The good news: no-one was dead. I was half expecting the number of dead to be in plural. A buddy from my union who tried to drive up to our house thought maybe a cop had been killed, for such a high police presence.
It turns out that a car circled the funeral viewing twice and a group of guys inside ran out with their guns pulled and began firing at the car.
With such a continuous war at home, its no wonder that young men join the armed forces. They are more likely to come home alive from Afghanistan than to stay alive in Oakland, California.
