San Leandro: Oh Man! I Didn't Condemn Hamas.

Doug's signature on the letter and the envelope it came in

Richard Mellor

I received the letter below in the post yesterday (8-4-25) from a Doug whose last name begins with an S but I can’t decypher the rest of the letters. It’s a bit worrisome that he took time to find my home address but forgot to put a return address on the envelope, so I won’t be able to thank him for his advice. I would not say it is a threatening letter.

I am assuming he is responding to a letter I wrote to my local paper, the San Leandro Times, calling for our city council to condemn the genocide in Gaza, (see my letter below his). If not, as he mentions the San Leandro community, it might be because I posted some similar content to a local Facebook Page of that name.

Sadly, it is not uncommon for folks to limit their public discourse on social media to local events and avoid unpleasantries like an ongoing genocide made possible by our own government supplying the weapons and money. I am not unsympathetic to this tendency especially as there appears to be nowhere to turn, but I refuse to surrender to it.

But the argument that we stick to local issues, because it’s nothing to do with our town or our community is simply wrong. Our mayor’s recent letter in the same San Leandro Times points out that we are living beyond our means and cuts and tax increases are needed. They all talk about fighting for us when they are on the campaign circuit but their fighting is limited to a very narrow arena and as soon as the real power, investors, real estate magnates, hedge fund managers and other social parasites that feed at the public trough demand it, their true role as agents of big business in our communities is revealed.

Here in San Leandro, a very important and well used footbridge across our creek was destroyed by trees in a storm. Yet who knows when that will be replaced? Yet the Biden Administration spent close to half a billion dollars building a jetty in Gaza giving the Zionist regime sea access to its victims. Aside from the tools of destruction, billions of US tax payers’ hard earned money has been sent to murder Palestinians. In the year up to October 2024 the US sent $17.9 billion to the Zionist regime according to the Watson Institute at Brown University (PDF) in what it refers to as a conservative estimate.

Yet a health issue can bankrupt a US family as our health care is so expensive and millions of us buy health care on credit cards. And don’t get me started on Dentists or the hosing problem or the climate crisis and a million other major issues that affect our local community.  So don’t tell me what happens in our small town is not affected by national or international events. The longer we ignore it the worse it will get.

So here is the letter I received in the mail yesterday with my letter to the paper below it. I am including a photo of Doug’s signature and if anyone local reading this knows Doug could you share this with him or have him send me his home address.  He describes himself as a Christian but didn’t find enough courage to put a return address on the letter; I have had courageous Christian friends whose faith was a major source of that courage. So if you know Doug, remind him in no uncertain terms that Jesus would have put a return address on his letters.

****************

“How about doing your little “tantrum dance” elsewhere and not use San leandro community to expose your biased and delusional theory about the Gaza War. How about instead condemning Hamas for starting this war, hiding behind innocent civilians, not releasing the hostages, and stealing the humanitarian aid causing this starvation.

When you admit that Hamas is the ones committing mass murder and genocide, then you might have some credibility. Say, “I condemn Hamas”. If you won’t then take your moral outrage and blow it out your nose.

As a Christian, I support Israel and and their noble cause to eradicate the barbaric sub human Hamas terrorists. Israel will always exist in spite of the constant rage of the anti-semites, who call for the destruction of this country.

These anti-Semites need to give this hate a rest and shine light and love instead of being dark and hateful.  Sincerely Doug S.”

My letter to the San Leandro Times

Demand an Arms Embargo on Israel

San Leandro Times
Thursday July 24th

San Leandro City Council needs to step up and condemn the Israeli/US genocidal war against the Palestinian people. Apart from it being the right thing to do from a moral viewpoint, we send billions of dollars to this Apartheid state in weaponry and cash without which it could not murder thousands of men women and children.

Meanwhile, millions of Americans are struggling to make ends meet.

The US ruling class is rife with anti-semites that have no love for Jews. It is committed to Israel, a colonial settler regime, as it is the only reliable ally US imperialism has in this important region of the world. The US Congress and the political class in general is dominated by Christian Zionists who see this slaughter as Biblical prophecy, another reason the war criminal Netanyahu was allowed in to the US and met with much applause in Congress.

Meanwhile, young anti-Zionist Jews are in the forefront of the campaign against Israel’s genocide which is the way to combat anti-semitism which the Zionist cause promotes. They are courageous young Americans and we need to support them.

All Germans weren’t Nazis and all Jews aren’t Zionists. Zionism is a political movement and Judaism is a religion; they are not the same. Zionism after its founding, was a fringe movement in Europe as most Jewish workers belonged to the Jewish Labor Bund or the socialist and communist parties. It was the Nazi Holocaust, the culmination of centuries of discrimination against Jews by Christian Europe, that changed that.

It was not Palestinians but Christian Europe that tried to exterminate its Jewish population but it is the Palestinians that are suffering for it.

Most American’s oppose this genocide and want a more productive use of our tax money.
