Frank Hammer: Why did UAW’s Shawn Fain Endorse Biden After Calling for a Ceasefire?

Frank Hammer, retired GM worker and former President of UAW Local 909 in Detroit, shares his views on the endorsement of Joe Biden by Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers Union. This comes after the UAW and Fain passed a resolution supporting a ceasefire in the Zionist assault on the population of Gaza.

The UAW’s endorsement has caused some rifts within the rank and file of the UAW which includes the group UAW Labor For Palestine and other factions for and against Biden. Michigan has a significant Arab American population and some are arguing Biden’s support of genocide could cost him the election.

Brother hammer is a long-time activist in the labor movement and community struggles and is a friend and comrade. We have regular discussions about these issues and on occasion have different takes on things. This is healthy for the workers' movement. I am not of the opinion that Shawn Fain and the UAW or any union endorsement of Biden is advantageous to organized labor or the workers' movement in general.
