What with the Pandemic and the ongoing decay of the capitalist system, we are seeing more and more crime and acts of desperation and hatred as working class people who have no job, no housing, no health care and so forth, resort to petty crime and robbery to survive.
As I write, 150.000 people in Mississippi have no water. As I explain in the video, here in the East San Francisco Bay Area we are experiencing an explosion of crime and homelessness as a result of these developments. The big business media reports on it constantly but with the goal of blaming the poor and the rest of us for conditions that are not of our own making.

Capitalism makes us sick. It is an inhumane system of production and if we are to survive as a species we must rid ourselves of it. Most importantly, we must not fall for the victim blaming that is prevalent in the big business media. Under certain conditions we are all capable of the most brutal crimes. I think in these situations it is important to recall the words of the US anthropologist Stephen Jay Gould who said:
“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”
“I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”
We all have the potential to be kind, loving and creative. Our dominant feature is one of solidarity and love for other human beings and all animals. Capitalism destroys or attempts to destroy this strong human impulse for kindness and solidarity with our species. Let's remember that as we cast judgment on those of us that have lost ourselves in this madness.
