The same year the US orchestrated the coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Mohammad Mossadegh in Iran. The notorious Shah, a friend of the CIA, British and US imperialism was installed and a reign of terror followed when all opposition was banned and individuals, tortured, murdered or just disappeared. It is these policies that are at the root of the migrations north as workers and people escape poverty US imposed economic policies backed by US armed forces.
