Reading this post brings to mind words and how ruling regimes use words. Democracy. This is wheeled out again and again to justify the most vicious barbaric acts and regimes which are in the interests of US and world capitalism. It was the Paris Commune in 1871 that first instituted universal suffrage, that is it was the first time the working class took power into their hands that a real genuine step towards democracy was taken. You do not hear much talk about the Paris Commune from these champions of democracy in the White House and their allies the butchers in Saudi Arabia. But when you control the mass media and the political system and the educational system you can prattle on about anything even though it may have no connection with reality. Democracy can never be achieved under capitalism. Even the systems which have votes on many issues, such as the US are not democracies. They are controlled by the non elected corporations and their systems have built in safeguards to prevent the majority changing societies in any fundamental way, such as ending capitalism. The most democratic of the capitalist regimes are bourgeois democracies, that is the democratic aspects are only tolerated as long as capitalism rules.
The other words that are used non stop to hide reality are the "International Community." Yes the international community. These are the regimes that toe the line of the imperialist countries. Those countries that do not are not accepted as being part of this "international community" and harassed and confronted at every turn. The international" community is international capitalism and those who do its bidding.
Words matter. We can only understand events if we see that capitalism makes words suit its aims at every turn.
Sean.
