I saw this movie last night and it made me so mad. It's about the orthodox Jewish groups in Israel, although they are in other countries too. It tells the story of the plight of women, two women in particular, trapped in this group of nutters. The husband of one gets up in the morning and prays to god thanking this mythical figure for "not having made me a woman." The movie basically describes a private association where men can do what the "f#@k they want and women, whose only pleasure in life is to have babies and raise them can concentrate on this.
During their menstrual period, women aren't even allowed to hand a man a teacup. The woman has to be seen merely as a storage facility for the man's offspring and the carer of it once it enters the world. The language, or what are actually prayers, is so offensive and misogynistic one would wonder how a secular state allows such hate groups to function openly. Imagine if such language was used against an ethnic group or religion in general. We recently had the US preacher that talked about burning the Koran and the mass media covered it day in day out for months. The general feeling throughout the world was one of revulsion.
If the language used against women by these religious nutcases was used openly to describe black people or Jews, there would be an outcry. Not being able to take a coffee cup from a black person or an Jew because we openly acknowledged that they are "dirty" wouldn't go down too well. (this was the case of course in less "civilized" times.)
I'm not singling out Jews here as all religions are the same. Where women can free themselves from such an exclusive club of misogynists it is not due to religious teaching but the concrete political struggle of women and their allies against such hatred. The Christian equivalent of these Orthodox Jews would create a similar society if they had their way; they're all haters of women. In the "extras" the director spoke about the need to review the women hating aspects of the religion but I don't agree. You can't just "tweak" the details as this is actually what the teachings of these religions really stand for, they are after all, the "word of god".
It is religion itself that has to be abandoned, this ridiculous idea that there is some supernatural force out there that directs events. All believers argue that their god is divine while the god(s) of others are man made; intolerance is built in to religious beliefs no matter how much of a smile they give you when they hand you their little pieces of paper. People have a right to practice their religion free from persecution, but when religious teaching calls for the persecution of others, a full half of the population; that's a different matter.
This was a slow, dark and somewhat depressing movie but I found it very interesting. It did make me want to throw the Rabbi from the train though.
