Follow up on the occupation of the Suzuki factory in India

This is a follow up from Sandeep about the Suzuki workers' struggle in India and the solidarity appeal we published earlier which is here.

Management and the Haryana govt. managed to coerce the workers’ leaders for an abject surrender

The Management and the Haryana govt. managed to coerce the workers’ leaders for an abject surrender in a deal brokered by the central trade unions. The main demand of the workers to recognize their union was not even discussed. The agreement says that all 11 sacked workers will be taken back but an enquiry will be initiated against some workers; the workers will lose 26 days’ wages – it can be even more if they resort to any indiscipline” during a two month period; the workers (!) have given an undertaking that they will not work with a vindictive attitude; the workers will resume work from Saturday and will have to work on Sunday to compensate for the “leave” they will avail on Friday!

This is what is described by the general secretary of AITUC in Gurgaon as a “win-win” situation for the management and workers! The national general secretary of AITUC Gurudas Dasgupta was announcing on major TV channels hours before the agreement was signed that all demands of the workers have been accepted and an agreement is being signed. He claimed that the Haryana Chief Minister BS Hudda is taking a “positive line” while the same channel was reporting that “On Wednesday evening, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda met MSI top executives, including Managing Director and CEO Shinzo Nakanishi, and was understood to have assured the firm of the state government’s support in not permitting the formation of a second union.” MrDasgupta shamelessly said that the right to form a Union was not the issue in this strike!! He said that forming a union was a matter entirely between the workers and the labour department, and the management has nothing to do with it!! You can see the links to these news at the end of this message.
