Big protests for reform expected in Egypt tomorrow. Tunisian workers expected to protest in solidarity.

Big demonstrations are expected in Egypt tomorrow on a national holiday that celebrates the achievements of the police force. These achievements are not so popular with those that have been tortured and maimed by the police under the undemocratic and dictatorial regime of Hosni Mubarak.  The national "day of revolution" as it is called is expected to take place throughout the country.

Workers in neighboring Tunisia plan to hold rallies in support of the Egyptians and many Egyptians plan to carry Tunisian flags as well according to reports. The Guardian UK reports that demonstrators want the country's interior minister fired and wants an end to Egypt's perpetual emergency law.  This is a law that permanently suspends civil rights.  Protestors also want free elections and an end to 30 years of the Mubarak dictatorship.

Strikes have been called and many opposition groups  are supporting the  protests which have been organized by online groups.  Police brutality is a big issue as numerous opposition figures have been tortured or killed by the security forces.

The Mubarak regime is a huge recipient of US taxpayer dollars second only to the Israelis in the region.  The Egyptian security forces have threatened severe punishment if the demonstrations take place as they will be illegal under the perpetual emergency law.

It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow.
