Stop Peralta board shutting down the childcare center at College of Alameda

Please come to the meeting tomorrow and lets keep this childcare center open. This below is from Laney Student and Power (SUP) Below the announcement is a clip of the events at the last meeting when supporters shut down the proceedings.

Richard

NO DECISIONS ABOUT US WITHOUT US.

TUESDAY, WE DECIDE OUR FUTURE FOR OURSELVES.

On Tuesday, April 27th, the Board plans to pass its 09-10 budget – 8 months late. For the third meeting in a row, the Board has refused to agendize a discussion about closure of COA child care. But we can’t wait any longer. We’re going to hold our own meeting during the Board meeting to discuss COA child care and other issues the Board refuses to address.

We are community college students who work for wages and work for grades every day of the week. As budget cuts deepen, the Peralta Board of Trustees has shown itself unable to rein in corruption among our administration but all too ready to slash services that are fundamental to our ability to learn.

We draw a line at shutting down the College of Alameda child care center. This was decision made by one administrator without input from moms losing their daycare, workers losing their jobs, or students. While the Board says there’s no money, their reasons for closing the center are filled with half-truths. When administrators need a raise or the Sheriff's department spends $1 million overbudget, the Board acquiesces. Yet, this Board thinks it’s appropriate to balance its faulty books on the backs of working moms.

We have begun to treat the board for what they are; irrelevant. If the board can't meet our needs and continues to make decisions antithetical to public education, we will take control of the failed institutions that pretend to govern and manage our education.

I think the Peralta board is blissfully unaware that its decision to close down the COA childcare center has a profound negative effect not only on the mothers but especially on their children. The COA childcare center plays a vital role in the proper upbringing and education of the children in its care. I read in this link- Daycare that the creative arts, including music, movement, dramatic play, puppetry, painting, sculpture, and drawing, are a crucial part of early childhood. Not only do the arts allow children to express themselves, but creative activity can enhance development of children's skills in literacy, science, math, social studies, and more. The Board should allow the childcare center's continued existence.
