(right) A mother in Iceland goes to the poll on today's Bank Bailout referendum.
A couple of months back we reported on this blog about the difficulty the Icelandic government were having convincing the Icelandic people that they had to settle the tab of their banking elites.
Icelandic banks swindled British and Dutch customers out of $5.2 billion. Those national governments, under local working class pressure, financially compensated the customers and took the tab to the Icelandic government. The Icelandic government said, "yes sure!" Then they had problems. The outrage by Icelandic people was so huge that the President said, "Wait, let's put it to the people, let there be a referendum on this!"
That Referendum on getting the people to pay for the banks' swindles was held today. Usually in these situations, like in union contract votes, the members say no, then they vote again (or in this case vote for the first time), and exhausted, the voters relent. Well, no way Jose on this one.
Only an incredible 2% of Iceland's voters supported the $5.2 billion taxation on themselves for the banks ****-up. TWO PERCENT. Some 93% voted NO and the rest of the ballots were spoilt.
VIVA ICELAND! VIVA THE RESISTANCE.
**** the BANKS!
