In the US: No Breastmilk For You.

We should not be surprised at this at all. At this point, the power of US capitalism at home is considerable affecting every aspect of our lives. Its media is very controlled and influential. We see ads all the time for diseases we've never heard of and the drug that will cure or contain them. The person dressed up like a doctor or some sort of professional tells us to call our doctor and ask if their drug is "right for you".

In this instance it is the influence of the corporations driving the position but also the religious right and the old bunch of male misogynists that dominate these institutions. It is the sickness of US capitalism. We can watch any amount of pornography where all sorts of images of female breasts on the screen more often than not with some substance or another speared over them and its accepted faire. Even regular TV is basically soft porn when it comes to women's bodies.  Breastfeeding in public? No way it's disgusting. In the US mass media, women's breasts are always sex organs. I'm not opposed to them being sex organs, so are eyes at times, but not all the time and only if the owner of them chooses so.

When I was traveling through Iraq in 1971 I would often see women breastfeeding like the time I awoke from my sleep on the floor of the train's passenger compartment to see  this Muslim woman feeding her child above my head. No one batted an eye.

That this US position at the UN occurred, is a reflection of the lack of freedom and social power in the US, not an example of it. It is an example of the power of thew capitalist class over society. One positive thing about Trump is he is closing all "official" avenues of expression and resistance as he wages his war on workers and the poor. He is leaving people fewer and fewer "official" options for redress which will mean the working class will have to take to the streets, have to rely on its own strength, have to take mass action to defend it gains that the Predator in Chief is undermining.  He is preparing the ground for the major battles ahead. The Democrats, that other billionaires party, will not, cannot, reverse course, only sugar coat the damage and the US working class has had enough of that.

U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials

A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly.
Based on decades of research, the resolution says that mother’s milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes.
Then the United States delegation, embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers, upended the deliberations.
American officials sought to water down the resolution by removing language that called on governments to “protect, promote and support breast-feeding” and another passage that called on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that many experts say can have deleterious effects on young children.
