The heroic struggle of Native Americans against colonial power

Richard Mellor

I put this on Facebook but was thinking a bit more about it.  The victors write the history the saying goes and it's perhaps one of the most accurate and truthful statements. I grew up in England mostly and was never really aware of the real history that led to the union of England Ireland Scotland and wales that we know as the United Kingdom. My Scottish friends who voted for Independence recently called the Act of Union an agreement signed through coercion. The real nature of British colonial expansion was not explained to me clearly either. I wasn't really aware of English working class history  just as in the US most workers would have no knowledge of the Seattle General Strike, the Great Uprising of 1877 or the 44-day Flint sit down, the Ludlow Massacre, River Rouge etc. We are not taught of the real brutality of slavery and the mass rape that occurred over centuries.  We have to find out these historical facts ourselves ion the main.

Growing up we watched cowboy and Indian shows created in Hollywood, sheer racist propaganda. As I wrote before, I never knew Tonto meant stupid until I was an adult. I just assumed it was an Indian name. But the subjugation by a much more technologically advanced colonial military, of the native people was not easy. Below is just a sample of the effort it took to overcome resistance to colonization by the native population.  This piece was originally published at Activist Post and you can read the piece in its entirety there.
