What sort of nation state can you build out of this? Bantustans. |
Barack Obama is the consummate bourgeois politician and front man for capital. He is not complicated or hard to figure out as he squirms his way through a complicated web of world relations that reflect, among other things, the declining influence and power of US imperialism on the world stage.
The attempt by the Palestinians to gain formal membership in the UN as a state is another example of the crazed and desperate US foreign policy that is the source of hatred and at times violence directed at the US and its citizens. Reading some of Obama’s comments at the UN regarding the situation is enough to make me feel sick, one can only imagine the anger that swells in the bellies of the victims of US and its proxy, Israel’s policies in the region.
“There is no shortcut to the end of a conflict that has endured for decades” Obama told the UN General Assembly yesterday. It gets worse, “Ultimately it is Israeli’s and Palestinians who must live side by side. Ultimately it is Israeli’s and Palestinians---not us---who must reach agreement on the issues that divide them” Obama added.

But the Palestinians are not simply negotiating with Israel; they are negotiating with US capitalism, the power behind Israel. Israel is US imperialism’s most reliable ally in the region receiving vast amounts of cash and arms for its loyalty. And who are the Israelis? Every Jew in the world including my own offspring has more rights in Israel than a native born Palestinian. US planes, weapons and technology assist the Zionist regime in keeping the Palestinians at bay as their homes and communities are bulldozed by US made machinery. The crazed right wing neo fascist settlers are the Zionists’ front line of attack. Their racism and hatred of Palestinians is renowned and their resolve strong, after all, this land was given to them by god. They come from all over the world, South Africa, the US, Russia to claim Palestinian land as their own. * They are joined by some Christian Zionists who, when their Jesus arrives, will relish the moment their temporary Jewish allies in refusing to accept their Christian lord and god will suffer everlasting misery in hell.
Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu wants peace it appears but the Palestinians refuse to give Israel “peace in return” he tells the UN. I was talking to a conservative guy the other day who knows nothing about the history of the conflict but who was adamant in his argument to me that, “This would all end if the Palestinians would leave the Jews alone. They’ve been at it for centuries.” I got a blank look when I informed him that Jews and Muslims in the region have lived in relative harmony over the centuries up until the Zionist invasion and the creation of the state of Israel which was given life after the anti-Semitism of Stalinism failed the Jews of Europe and the Nazi’s efforts to exterminate them, something which had nothing to do with Palestinians but for which they've paid dearly. In fact, historically Jews had a much more peaceful existence in the Muslim world than they did in Christian Europe. Had the victorious allies put the Jewish homeland in Bavaria France or England we'd have seen some violence for sure.
Israel is armed to the teeth and has one of the strongest and most technologically advanced military's in the world. The Israeli Defense Force is not a defense force in the true sense but an occupation army. Gaza is but the largest open-air prison in the world. The Israeli’s control its power, water supply and food intake.
Despite the fact that UN recognition would change nothing on the ground, the US is compelled to oppose it, even more so now that many of it’s flunkies in the Arab world have been driven out or are less firmly entrenched and the US is concerned that such a move would allow the Palestinians to charge Israeli military officers with war crimes at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Also, the Arab masses have taken center stage and it is still not certain where this will all lead. Egypt in particular is still in a state of flux and the forces that brought down Mubarak against US capitalism’s wishes have not been silenced. This decision to oppose UN recognition, as empty as it is, will increase animosity for America and strengthen so-called terrorist groups if people find no alternative route.
Obama said yesterday that he supports the Palestinian cause and a Palestinian state but that it “can’t be achieved through UN decree.” But if my memory serves me right, wasn’t the state of Israel created by UN decree?
The Palestinian workers and youth are not fooled by Obama’s words and his slick presentation no more than they were fooled by the previous spokesperson for US capitalism, the imbecile George Bush.
The bad economic news after today’s actions by the US federal reserve will add further fuel to the global fire that is still burning since the onset of what has been termed the “Great Recession.”. And in the midst of all this, the struggle of the Palestinian people to regain the land from which they were expelled and the right to a nation state will continue.
* I would be interested in knowing the dominant nationality of the settlers. I get the impression most of them are from the US but have not researched this.
