No one abroad is fooled by Obama's hypocritical blabber about democracy
The constant demonstrations in Iraq rarely make the news in the US, same with Bahrain and Yemen, opressive regimes backed by US capitalism. Obama's talk of supporting democracy in Egypt comes only after it's funding and arming of the ruthless dictator Mubarak was no longer possible.
The thing is that most workers and peasants throughout the world know this, see through the hypocrisy and lies. Many of them of course are victims of US bombs and military hardware. A guy got annoyed with me the other night because I didn't give the answer he wanted to a question about the Bin laden assassination. He was enraged. The poison of nationalism coupled with ignorance of what goes on in the world, allows someone to be so enraged at the death of 3000 of their nationality and the death of a million Iraqi's or 3 million Vietnamese doesn't raise an eyebrow.
The other important aspect as to why someone like Obama can prance around thew world talking about peace and democracy is the censorship of information here in the US. The US mass media is the most censored and controlled, certainly in the advanced capitalist economies. When it comes to Al Jazeera, a news agency that does not not have the same access to the US population as CNN or Fox, the reporting is far superior, but, like my friend above, many Americans believe it is a "terrorist" network. You can tell how starved we are over here when you consider the mount of hits Al Jazeera, and English language outlets on the Internet like the Guardian and the Independent get from the US. I am sure that there are an equal number of Spanish speakers and others in the US who get their news from abroad.
