Wikileaks reveals how the Vatican is an obstacle to peace and the elimination of poverty

Cables released by Wikileaks today lay bare the truth we all know about the Vatican and its ruler; all the talk of Christian tolerance is bunk.

Many people would not be aware that the Catholic Church is the only religion in the world that has its own state and diplomatic relations with more than 170 countries and has used it political power to protect its interests.

Cables reveal that the Vatican refused to allow its officials to testify before an Irish commission investigating abuse of children by priests and forced the Irish government to guarantee immunity to its representatives.

The released information confirms what many people already know, that the Vatican is an obstacle to peace and human cooperation and its preachings on the subject are nothing but a joke. The Vatican actively opposed a Muslim country’s (Turkey) entrance in to the EU and actively lobbied for “Christian roots” to be “enshrined” in the EU constitution. This is not activity that reveals a compassionate and all loving organization is it?

As the British Guardian reported on the leaks released today:
“Roman Catholicism is the only religion in the world with the status of a sovereign state, allowing the pope's most senior clerics to sit at the top table with world leaders. The cables reveal the Vatican routinely wielding influence through diplomatic channels while sometimes denying it is doing so. The Vatican has diplomatic relations with 177 countries and has used its diplomatic status to lobby the US, United Nations and European Union in a concerted bid to impose its moral agenda through national and international parliaments.”

This is a powerful global capitalist institution that is a major obstacle to genuine human cooperation and whose activities perpetuate war, violence and division between people's. Cables reveal that "the Holy See hopes that Poland will hold the line at the EU on 'life and family' issues that arise" as the Vatican considered Poland as a counter to the secular values of Western Europe. Polish politics has always been "tinged" with Catholic anti-Semitism.  Theodore Hertzl, the founder of Zionism boasted as an anti-socialist that Zionism was "Taking the Jews away from the revolutionary parties.".  The sovereign state we call the Vatican has found the time to excommunicate women who dared practice the mass but was unable to excommunicate Hitler.  Like, the Zionists, the Vatican was hostile to the radical socialist ideas that existed among the European Jewish community. The sovereign state we know as the Vatican has a history of rampant anti-Semitism to add to its horrors.  Cementing "Christian Values" in the EU constitution is a continuation of this trend despite being aimed primarily at the growing Muslim population.

The Vatican made it clear to the US that it wanted to “undermine” Chavez in Venezuela because he in turn was undermining Catholic power in the country by associating the church hierarchy with Venezuela’s “privileged class” which is reality and works closely with the US to "reduce the influence of Chávez and break up his cabal in Latin America"

The Vatican is not a religious institution in the way that an individual believer may have a personal relationship with god. It is a capitalist institution that is and always has been an obstacle to human development and human freedom; it was originally the church of the feudal aristocracy. It propagates capitalist ideology and actively crushes those who oppose it and struggle for human freedom like the Liberation Theologists throughout Central America.

Nothing released about the Vatican’s dirty dealings is a surprise. But the releasing of “official” documents complete with statements undermines the credibility this institution further and the system it perpetuates. It is easier to argue that the official public face of these institutions of capitalism are a sham and that the Vatican’s advice to millions of those it influences to pray for peace is a cover for them as they work against it.  Activists all know the positive effect getting a hold of an internal bosses' memo has on the workers, even if it something we already know.

Praying for these institutions to go away or to act in our interests won’t work either unfortunately. We have to consciously eliminate them from our lives through action. Freeing humanity from the slavery of the market will free us from its institutions like the Vatican. It has nothing to do with an individual’s personal belief in god and their right to do so free from persecution.
