New York Rep. Peter King |
They are going after Assange and it cannot be ruled out that he will be assassinated. As a friend and I were saying this morning, what are they to do? Put him on trial? This would open up the possibility of even more unpleasant truths coming out. The US is putting pressure on foreign governments and Internet servers to aid in its pursuit of Assange. Amazon and another server have dropped Wikileaks already. We might well see some foreign leaders fall due to the Wikileaks publications also.
The US is claiming that American lives are threatened by Assuage’s actions. Hilary Clinton claims that the leaks are "an attack on the international community, the alliances and partnerships, the conventions and negotiations that safeguard global security and advance economic prosperity". One state dept. lawyer accuses Assuage of acting "without regard to the security and the sanctity of the lives your actions endanger". But according to one anonymous Pentagon spokesperson the US has no evidence that people had died or been harmed because of information from Wikileaks documents. And thugs like Pentagon representatives, Hilary Clinton or the likes of Sarah Palin who has also had a lot to say, care nothing about human lives.
Daniel Ellsberg who released the Pentagon Papers that exposed the US government cover ups and lies during the Vietnam war, a war in which the US killed some 4 million people, doesn’t think the leaks are a threat. "The best justification they can find for secrecy is that lives are at stake. Actually, lives are at stake as a result of the silences and lies which a lot of these leaks reveal," he told the BBC.
"The same charges were made against the Pentagon Papers and turned out to be quite invalid." He added. We all remember the Gulf of Tonkin incident don't we?
We should not underestimate this; it is a major crisis for capitalism. One of the problems they have is that the system and its proponents have many enemies. Some two million people have access to the material that Assuage has released and in this age of computers, the ability of the capitalist class to control information is weakened. The other problem with a trial or an open confrontation with Wikileaks is the mood in society; the politicians are hated, the bankers are hated. In the US, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are unpopular and capitalism is under attack throughout the globe. Even in the US, recent polls found that 36% of the population has a favorable view of socialism. To the Iraqis and millions abroad, the leaks in the information come as no surprise at all.
They will continue to hunt Assuage down and discredit him with tales about US lives and security. One way to avoid a trial, outside of assassination, is to accuse him of terrorism and he can be labeled an enemy combatant, that’s how come hundreds of people, including children have been housed in Guantanamo in occupied Cuba without any rights at all, even the rights of soldiers in wartime.
This process is already underway as one member of Congress, Pete King of New York, has called for the US Attorney General to designate Wikileaks a terrorist organization and to prosecute founder Julian Assange for espionage. The former Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee has also called for whoever leaked the 250,000 US diplomatic cables to be executed. This is what they will do to US workers when we disrupt the economy in defense of our rights and livelihoods. There were strikes right after 911 that they were very quick to say were acts of terrorism as they disrupted the economic life of the country. Anything that prevents profit taking is terrorism.
