100,000 protest against cuts in Dublin Ireland

Some 100,000 people demonstrated in Dublin Ireland against budget cuts today that are being imposed by the government to reduce debts. People are angry, as we are here in the US that the vast majority of the $113 billion dollars the Irish government is borrowing is going to bail out the banks. Civil servants, other workers and youth were out in force.

The opposition has come from a varied section of society. One contractor who was protesting had this to say:
"We should be more like the French and get onto the streets more often. Because our politicians go over to Europe and tell the EU that our people do not demonstrate, they don't take to the streets. It's time we changed that and openly opposed what is going on,"

It was time the Irish became more militant he told the Guardian. We can see why we receive very little news about protests that take place around the world here as people get ideas.

The Irish protests follow the largest general strike in the last 22 years in Portugal on Wednesday and the Greek events before that.

There are numerous clips about today's protests on Youtube
