At the same time as these events take place we have had the announcement of the death of the actor Dennis Hopper. He was linked as other actors of his time were to the idea of being a rebel without a cause. He was in many movies and TV series as a drunk, a drug addict, in his life he was also caught up in these activities. The image portrayed was that he was a rebel. But as I say without a cause. Hollywood created this idea, that is a rebel without a cause. It was real romantic you see, much better for them than a rebel with a cause.
Hopper became known in the 1950's, 1960's and on. These were the years of the civil rights movement, the anti Vietnam war, the womans' movement, that is of mass revolt, of tens of millions fighting for great causes. How in the hell could a rebel not have a cause in these decades. Hollywood, the mass propaganda machine for capitalism in the entertainment world created Hopper. The last thing they wanted was a rebel with a cause, racism, sexism, anti war, so they created a rebel who took dope and rode motor cycles and lived a dissolute life. None of these were the slightest threat to capitalism and the more young people they could get to follow Hoppers example the safer the system was.
We need to be on guard against capitalism's manipulation of our ideas and thinking. They realize that young people have a tendency to rebel so they try and create targets for this rebellion which do not threaten capitalism. There are plenty of causes crying out for struggle today. World poverty and environmental destruction, war, racism and sexism, there is no excuse for a rebel being without a cause today. why just now the struggle against US imperialism and its Zionist ally in the Middle East is crying out to be opposed.
Sean.
