Least Vacation in the Land of the Free as US Workers Bottom the List of Paid Vacations and Time Off Among Advanced Nations

The Center for Economic Policy and Research issued a report back in 2007 about the dismal amount of paid time off US workers receive.  The United States is the only advanced economy that doesn't guarantee its workers any paid vacation or holidays, the report points out, so 1 in 4 US workers receive no paid vacation or paid holidays and the rest of us fare not much better when compared to Europeans. In fact, the US capitalist class like to boast about the productivity of US workers, which is true, but there is no miracle answer to why this is except we spend more time at work, some two months a year on average when compared to workers in other industrialized countries.

"The lack of paid vacation and paid holidays in the U.S. is particularly acute for lower-wage and part-time workers, and for employees of small businesses." the report adds.  Meanwhile, workers in Britain are guaranteed 20 days off a year.  US Journalist Michael Goldfarb who lives in London writes:
"Obviously, people in America do get paid annual leave, but for most wage earners it is subject to so many different calculations based on seniority and how much you earn, it can only be described as miserly. In other words, it is a privilege to be earned rather than a normal part of compensation."

"Nine days of annual leave is what the average American accrues during the course of a year. So you have to be at your job for 12 months before you begin to get even that amount."

As this report was issued in 2007, given the job losses and savaging of already meager benefits in the US, not to mention the fear those still working will be having about losing their jobs if they open their mouths, it is quite likely the gap between what Europeans and US workers receive will be even larger. The most important freedom in the US, second to the right to make profit off of the work of others, is the freedom to fire workers easily and that is much easier to do here than in Europe.

* Would more holiday be good for America?

Yes it's certainly easy to get fired here.we always hear about the problem employees .it is most important to mention the many really great employees that lost their jobs in the name of good business.they were cast off and thrown out of their jobs like garbage.these are the real people that built this country.they simply deserve to be treated better.it is bad economics to take money out of peoples pockets.it is also soul destroying for unemployed people and their loved ones.children need confidence and security to get a effective education.they just need so much love and support to do well.it helps a lot when their parents have good jobs.
