I am in the Tahoe National Forest so I have been without a signal for a bit. I will be driving in to town in a bit and hopefully can post this then. Not having read much news at all in the past two days I hope I am not off base.
I did see a headline referring to Trump claiming that Iran is asking for talks. This ridiculous statement and the use of the term “asking” reminds me how I was taught about the Treaty of Nanking in 1842. What was left out or hidden in this version, was that the British bombed Nanking in to submission. The Chinese fought two wars against the British in an effort to stop them importing opium in to the country. From what I recall, a significant part of the treaty was that the Chinese had to pay reparations (indemnity) to the British for loss of income from the opium trade.
It’s no wonder the Chinese today refer to the 19th century as the century of humiliation or words to that effect. This is just a small part of Britain’s violent colonial past.
The Zionist regime heading the US settler colony, has served its US masters well as the main defender of US imperialism’s interests in the Middle East. Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen have all been under decades of assault by the US and its ally. The reader might recall Clinton bombing that factory in Egypt that was supposedly making chemical weapons or something like that. It turns out it was one of the few sources for the manufacture of drugs and medicines in the area. (I am without internet so can’t do quick searches.}
Myself, like the vast majority of the people in this world, was hoping that Iran would give the racist, arrogant, Zionist regime a good spanking, a taste of what they have given, and are continuing to give the Palestinian population as I write.
I should say that if Iran is seeking some relief or are willing to talk, this is not an example of Iran’s weakness or resolve to defend the nation after Israel’s unprovoked attack. Let’s be clear, Iran would easily defeat the Zionist regime in any serious conflict but Iran is not fighting Israel. The British, and the US along with its junior partner Jordan, has their aircraft in the skies intercepting Iran’s missiles. This allows the US supplied Israeli air force to control much of Iran’s air space as has been stated in the mass media. In addition, Germany, France and other western nations are supplying parts to the Zionists. Iran is up against a European invasion.
Regime Change
One rather optimistic comment on Facebook suggested that if the US is seeking regime change hopefully Iranian revolutionaries will come to the fore and replace the Mullah’s. The comment was referring to revolutionaries of the left sort. Fat chance of that. Unfortunately, US imperialism’s regime change efforts has been a disastrous one including for US workers who forked out some $3trillion dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan and got nothing for it.
The US promoted the coup against the democratically elected government of Salvatorè Allende in Chile that led to his murder. He was replaced by the dictator Pinochet who murdered thousands of Chilean workers and youth.
The US overthrew the government of Guatemala in 1953 and replaced it with a ruthless dictator that, by some accounts slaughtered some 200,000 indigenous people. Ever wonder why there’s so many Guatemalans in California barely surviving and now being rounded up by Trump’s gangs. The same year, the US overthrew the democratically elected government of Iran and installed another killer we know as the Shah of Iran.
The regime change the US wants does not include forces that will not Kow Tow to the folks in Washington.
None of this is unexpected really but it is impossible not to recognize that we are in an historically new period. The United Nations has proved incapable of stopping the genocide of the Palestinian people by Israel, armed and financed by the U.S. We have watched thousands upon thousands of people, overwhelmingly civilians, being slaughtered by Israeli bombing as their entire physical community has been wiped from the face of the earth
Both Biden, Trump and practically the entire US Congress is guilty of genocide. Mind you, this is nothing new when it comes to the US or other colonial nations; long before a couple of million Iraqi’s were slaughtered, or 4 million Vietnamese were wiped out without any justifiable reason. The US fought its longest genocidal war against the Native People of this continent. Like Vietnam where the US dropped dioxin (contained in the herbicide Agent Orange) on the people’s food supply in order to starve them out, the US had a conscious policy to kill all the bison in an effort to starve the Native Americans like the Zionists are doing in Gaza, denying food and water to starving people.
In the war against the indigenous population, blankets infected with typhoid were sold to the natives (vermin they were called) as a means of eliminating not just a foe in battle, but entire people and their culture. Look up the colonial figure Amherst and his role; and he has a city and a university named after him.
It is hard to determine where this will all lead. I cannot abandon my view, that I believe is confirmed by history, that the working class of the US will, be forced if nothing else, to enter the stage of history and confront the US ruling class with a vengeance, It will not be a smooth history with defeats and at the same time great steps forward. I say this because the US ruling class, the governors of weakening imperial power is forced to intensify its assault on its own workers as it struggles to maintain its dominant position in the world stage. I should add that if we do not, through nuclear conflict or climate change, the two greatest dangers we face today, our civilization on this planet could be wiped out.
We would not be the first civilization to be buried beneath the oceans or landscapes of the world.
I have spoken to a number of people over time, including some young people in the past period and in my travels. Their answers confirm what I, and many others have stated in the past; the dominant view among millions of Americans is that there is nothing they can do. They correctly see that there is no social force out there that they can turn to, that appeals to them, that represents in its composition approach and program a real alternative to the status quo.
I was speaking to two young women workers today, Barristas I believe is the correct term for these workers. Two issues stood out. One spoke in response to me pointing out the gains of women and how these came about. She pointed out that we are a very big country and people have all these different issues and this is a hindrance to us coming together. It is easier in a small country she said. This is all true.
I pointed out the dominance of identity politics and how this is a conservative, divisive politics but is promoted for that reason. The other young woman also pointed out that there’s this side and that side and we just don’t know who is telling us the truth. I agreed with that but there are alternative outlets these days. They both felt that given they can’t do anything they have hard time even watching the news; and like millions of people, avoid it. I pointed out the potential power of organized labor here in California and throughout the continent and, as is usually the case, they were completely unaware of working class or labor history. The fault for this lies primarily with the heads of organized labor.
They were not aware almost nine million people turned out in opposition to Trump according to the media. This was the largest protest in US history
They were both decent young workers.
A social force that we can turn to, with its roots firmly planted in the working class. and just as important, a leadership that recognizes what workers need to live a decent life and were willing to fight for it, could change the balance of class forces in the US. This will occur in my opinion; and we learn very quickly during periods of mass struggle. But, in the last analysis, a leadership of the working class, arising out of the working class that is offering a platform and approach as a path to emancipation, will be sure to fail if it doesn’t make it very clear that the system of production we know as capitalism cannot be reformed, it has to be replaced. A democratic Socialist system of production based on human needs not profit, is the only alternative we have.
Society needs new managers.
